Daimler AG said Wednesday that Mercedes Benz deliveries fell in the first quarter of this year as the coronavirus pandemic forced global business to shutter and consumer spending to slow.

Mercedes Benz delivered 477,378 cars in the first quarter, down 15% from the same period a year before, the company said.

Mercedes-Benz Vans sold 64,588 commercial vans in the first quarter of 2020, a 14.9% fall from a year earlier.

"The year 2020 started well and we were able to increase sales of our core model series especially in January," said Marcus Breitschwerdt, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.

"The impact of the corona crisis seriously weakened our unit sales already in March, and we therefore did not achieve our target numbers in the first quarter."
