Tesco PLC (TSCO.LN) last year donated 63% more food to various
causes that would have otherwise been thrown away, cutting its
wasted food ratio 17% from the previous year, the British grocer
said Tuesday.
The supermarket chain said just 0.78% of the 10 million metric
tons of food in its stores went unsold last year, and that it
redistributed 43% of that unsold food to some of the nearly 7,000
charities and community groups that it works with.
Tesco Chief Executive Officer Dave Lewis urged other businesses
to report their food waste data to not only help hungry people but
also cut greenhouse gas emissions.
"Publicly reporting food data is crucial to delivering on this
ambition," Mr. Lewis said.
