The Clorox Company (CLX) on Wednesday said it filed a lawsuit against Reckitt Benckiser Group PLC (RBGLY), saying that company's ads falsely claim its Lysol products are superior.
The lawsuit alleges Reckitt Benckiser's campaign is designed to mislead consumers to purchase that company's products instead of Clorox products based on misinformation, Clorox said.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in the Northern District of California and asks for a court order halting the ads and requiring Reckitt Benckiser to surrender any profits it has earned as a result of them.
The lawsuit is also requesting corrective advertising, unspecified damages and attorneys' fees, Clorox said.
In the suit, Clorox says, "Reckitt has undertaken a wide-ranging, false and deceptive advertising campaign designed to erode consumer confidence and trust in the Clorox brand," to increase sales of its Lysol products.
A Reckitt Benckiser spokesperson wasn't immediately available to comment.
