Nestle SA (NESN.EB) is looking to move further into the meat-free market by launching a new plant-based burger in Europe, and plans to roll out a similar product for the American consumer later this year.

The Swiss food-and-beverage giant said Tuesday that it will launch its Garden Gourmet Incredible Burger in Europe this month. The cook-from-raw burger will be available in eight countries including Belgium and Germany.

"Many consumers recognize that less meat in their diet is good for them and for the planet, but plant-based meat alternatives often don't live up to their expectations," Nestle said.

This is the lastest step by Nestle to adapt its expansive product portfolio to shifting consumer tastes. The company sold its U.S. confectionary business to Ferrero SpA early last year and said in February it would explore strategic options for its Herta cold cuts business, while retaining the existing Herta-branded dough and vegetarian business.

This fall, Nestle will introduce a cook-from-raw plant-based burger, known as the Awesome Burger, in the U.S. under the Sweet Earth brand.

Nestle said both burgers are the result of a collaboration between culinary chefs, alternative protein researchers and local food experts at both Garden Gourmet and Sweet Earth.
