Diesel Technology Forum

It seems to me that the industry leaders have come together trying to inform the public of the values of Clean Diesel Technology. This is one of things that is going on in the economy that we are not hearing much about. Maybe that is about to change.
corky:o)

Members of the Diesel Technology Forum and other industry thought leaders were asked to share their voice on clean diesel technology. They reflect on the environmental progress of clean diesel technology and the public policy challenges that lie ahead as the U.S. strides toward a clean energy economy and works to embrace an β€œall of the above” energy strategy.

Engines and Technologies

Now here:o)is an interesting article speaking of increased use of diesel engines.

Engines that run on diesel fuel may become more popular in the United States now that new emission control technologies are allowing for a wide range of diesel engines to meet federal and state air quality standards, the report says. Replacing a 2007 model spark-ignition engine with a base-level CI diesel engine – including a six-speed dual clutch transmission and other efficiencies – could reduce fuel consumption by about 33 percent, and with an RPE of about $4,800 for a six-cylinder engine. Advanced CI diesel engines, expected to reach the market in the next five years, could reduce fuel consumption an additional 7 percent to 13 percent, with estimated vehicle RPE cost of about $4,600 for small passenger cars to $5,900 for intermediate or larger vehicles.

Hey Corky, I do remember it all. Still peek in from time to time.

I think ESWW would be doing multiple fold better in share price had not the economy collapsed in late 2008. That was and remains a crusher for ESWW, IMO.

Hope you are doing well, good Sir!

Happy 4th.

GWMAN:o)remember this. Permissible Cat. Just ran across this 2008 article.

The future is looking bright. Bucyrus has just released an MSHA approved 150 HP diesel power pack consisting of the Deutz 1013 FC engine and Bucyrus designed emissions control system. The Bucyrus 150 HP diesel power pack, utilizing a Tier II engine coupled with the unique emissions control technology, provides the lowest vent rate per horse power of any power pack on the market today and superior filter life can be expected because of the reduced diesel particulate matter. Bucyrus’ 150 HP power pack is used in diesel scoops and haulage vehicles. It can also be used to re-power older generation ramcars and utility vehicles that require upgrades to meet new emissions standards.
The Bucyrus design team has also developed fully electronic controls and digital dash boards. A Bucyrus Diesel Control System (DCS) is also available for the diesel product group and intense development is currently underway on the design of an electronic 225 HP diesel power pack to meet EURO 3 and 4 and US Tier III standards.

Environmental Solutions Worldwide, Inc. Launches ThermaCat Active Level III Plus Diesel Particulate Filter Engineered Specifically for School Bus Applications into Billion Dollar Diesel Retrofit Market

* Press Release
* Source: Environmental Solutions Worldwide Inc.
* On Tuesday August 18, 2009, 9:30 am EDT

CONCORD, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Environmental Solutions Worldwide Inc. (OTCBB: $ESWW - News) (Frankfurt Stock Exchange FWB: EOW) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary ESW Canada Inc. (ESWC) has officially launched their California Air Resources Board (CARB) verified ThermaCat™ Active Level III Plus Diesel particulate Filter engineered specifically for school buses into the North American retrofit market.

ThermaCat™ school bus systems are currently being offered through ESWC’s distribution network across the United States and Canada. ESWC’s sales team has worked diligently over the course of the past year setting up the key distributers along with the required training to become ‘ThermaCat™ Certified Installers’. This program, designed to ensure the proper application of the technology, guarantees that all ThermaCat™ school bus installations will be carried out by licensed, qualified technicians meeting our strict standards. Because the complete ThermaCat™ school bus retrofit kit is engineered and manufactured for installation on each vehicle manufacturer’s model and year, ‘Certified’ installations are done without alterations to the bus frame/chassis which could potentially compromise the buses safety.

The ThermaCat™ is the latest ‘State of the Art’ diesel emissions reduction technology to receive CARB’s regulatory approval and the first Active Level III Plus Diesel particulate Filter system to utilize real-time filter cleaning capabilities. This safe, repeated, controlled process regenerates the collected Particulate Matter stored in the Diesel Particulate Filter in real-time engine operation. By doing so, the ThermaCat™ maintains optimized emissions reductions in cold or inconsistent duty cycle applications without the need for driver interface, expensive regeneration equipment, vehicle downtime or daily maintenance intervals. This unique approach gives the ThermaCat™ Active Level III Plus catalyst system a very large vehicle cross section and demographic of school bus applications. (1.)

In January of 2009 the ThermaCat™ became the first and only Active Level III Plus Diesel particulate Filter system to meet compliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 301) by specifically meeting the mandatory requirements School Bus vehicle manufacturers must adhere to. At the conclusion of the crash test, although the bus was deemed a total loss, the ThermaCat™ passed the FMVSS 301 protocol with zero failure. In a separate test procedure the ThermaCat™ system and proprietary school bus installation kit were tested on a 1,000 hour / 100,000 mile vibration and shock durability simulation machine. The ThermaCat™ passed the test with zero failure to the system or installation components. (2.)

In June of 2009, First Student, a nationwide school bus transportation provider, notified the Company that the first ThermaCat™ installed on one of their buses, had passed the California Highway Patrol (CHP) inspection for applications on school buses carrying children on California roads. With this CHP approved installation, the ThermaCat™ became the first fully compliant FMVSS 301 retrofit Level III Plus diesel emissions reduction device utilizing a diesel fuel based real-time active regeneration technology to legally be installed on a school bus operating in the State of California. (2.)

“David J. Johnson, ESW's President and CEO commented. Every day of the school year, millions of children in North America take bus transportation to and from school being exposed to potentially health threatening diesel engine emissions. Commercializing what we believe to be the cleanest, safest retrofit diesel engine emissions reduction technology for these in service buses was one of our primary goals from the beginning. With the successful launch of the ThermaCat™ school bus product, we believe we have achieved just that.”

“The current North American market consists of a total estimated population in excess of 490,000 school buses and represents one of the best funded retrofit programs.” Mr. Johnson further remarked. “These vehicle demographic numbers did not go unnoticed when we began this comprehensive program over two years ago resulting in this latest CARB verification. We look forward to working through our established North American distribution network to service one of the most important sectors of our market.”

View Additional ProfilesCONCORD, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Environmental Solutions Worldwide Inc. (OTCBB: ESWW) (Frankfurt Stock Exchange FWB: EOW) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary ESW Canada Inc. (ESWC) received notification from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) that the Company's ThermaCat(TM) Active Level III Plus catalyst system has passed the first inspection for usage on school buses carrying children on California roads.

CHP inspected the ThermaCat(TM) installation on the First Student school bus located in the Los Angeles Area. Westrux is ESWC's distributor and certified ThermaCat(TM) installation facility as well as Los Angles California's largest Navistar, International Truck and Engine dealer with six strategic locations. First Student, one of Westrux fleet customers, is the largest school bus operator in the United States and Canada with a fleet of more than 60,000 buses in service.

With the success of this CHP inspected and approved installation, the ThermaCat(TM) has become the first fully compliant Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 301 (FMVSS 301) retrofit Level III Plus diesel emissions reduction device utilizing a diesel fuel based real-time active regeneration technology to legally be installed on a school bus operating in the State of California. The complete ThermaCat(TM) retrofit kit is engineered and manufactured for installation on each model and year of school bus without alterations to the frame/chassis or compromising its safety.

In January of 2009 ESWC became the first Company to successfully meet the applicable FMVSS 301 (crash test) for school buses at a recognized third party testing facility in Wisconsin. At the conclusion of the test, although the bus was deemed a total loss, the ThermaCat(TM) passed the crash protocol with a zero failure rate. In a separate test procedure at the same facility, the ThermaCat(TM) Active Level III Plus catalyst system and school bus installation kit were tested on a 1000 hour 100,000 mile vibration and shock durability simulation machine. Again, the system passed the test protocol with zero failure to the system or installation components.

ESWC is currently awaiting full verification from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for its ThermaCat(TM) Active Level III Plus catalyst system for a multitude of on-road diesel engine applications including school buses. While waiting for the CARB verification and to facilitate the return of the school bus back to First Student for service carrying children, ESWC applied and received a CARB Experimental Permit for operation on California roads for this vehicle.

The ThermaCat(TM) system monitors engine exhaust temperature and pressure, determines when the required conditions are met and creates a diesel fuel based exothermic temperature increase into the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This repeated, controlled process of regenerating the collected Particulate Matter (PM) stored in the DPF in real-time engine operation lowers the systems backpressure. By doing so, the ThermaCat(TM) maintains optimized emissions reductions in cold or inconsistent duty cycle applications without the need for operator interface, expensive equipment downtime or daily maintenance intervals. This unique approach, coupled with added safety features, gives the ThermaCat(TM) Active Level III Plus catalyst system a large potential cross section and demographic of on-road applications including school buses.

"Terry Smith, Director of Parts Sales Westrux International stated. The ThermaCat(TM) Active Level III Catalyst System offers many user friendly advantages to our very large customer base in Southern California. Being that regeneration occurs during normal operation with no impact on drivability or performance; this is a huge advantage for our customers in order for them to maintain route schedules without costly downtime. We are looking forward to playing a significant part in the push to clean up the air quality in the Los Angeles community."

"David J. Johnson, ESW's President and CEO commented. The current North American market consists of a total estimated population in excess of 490,000 school buses, of which California represents an estimated 25,317 vehicles. These numbers did not go unnoticed when we began this comprehensive program two years ago. Our goal from the beginning was to bring what we believe to be the safest, most efficient diesel emission reduction technology to this sector of our industry with the focus on safety first. CHP's approval of the ThermaCat's(TM) first school bus installation we believe validates that we have done just that. We are looking forward to working through our North American distribution network with potential customers like First Student as the future unfolds."

In order to meet the MSHA certification requirements, the complete Power Package exhaust system could not have a surface temperature exceeding 302 degrees Fahrenheit. This critical requirement was established by MSHA in order to protect the equipment operators and mining personnel from the potential of coal dust related fires.

As with ESWC's Terra Cat(TM) HP-DOC Disposable High Temperature Filter combination system, the M-Cat(TM) reduces Hydro Carbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Particulate Matter (PM) while significantly extending the serviceable life of the filter between required changes. This reduces the equipment service downtime substantially, while lowering the equipments operating costs.

In September of 2008, after months of rigorous testing at MSHA's facility in Triadelphia, West Virginia, approval No. 07-FA080001-0 was issued to Bucyrus America, Inc. for the complete Power Package System incorporating the new 'Permissible M-Cat(TM)'. Since this approval, ESWC has received multiple sales orders from Bucyrus for the Permissible M-Cat(TM) and has started shipping units for their Power Package Systems. These Power Package Systems are being installed onto Bucyrus's new mining equipment as well as being retrofit onto existing equipment currently operating in the field.

Mr. David J. Johnson, ESW's President and CEO commented, "We are excited to become a supplier of catalytic converter technology for the underground coal mining industry. Bucyrus America has worked diligently in this tough sector of the regulatory market to become one of the first OEM's to successfully offer this type of advanced technology. We believe that Bucyrus's MSHA approved Diesel Power Package has the potential to increase the revenue stream for our Company while balancing out our mining catalyst product offerings."

ESWC has shipped the first 32 ThermaCat(TM) Active Level III Plus Diesel Particulate Filter (ADPF) Systems to E Global Solutions Inc. of Port Washington, NY through an exclusive distributorship arrangement. The ThermaCat(TM) meets the highest performance and classification level under the New York City Local Laws for emission controls, which require the use of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel and Best Available Control Technology (BACT) in on-road and off-road diesel vehicles used in New York City. Installed applications include on-highway cement mixers, dump trucks, and off-road excavators and loaders. This cross section ThermaCat(TM) Systems were sold and installed based on prior performance demonstrations of the technology.

"The ThermaCat(TM) Systems installed by E Global Solutions are performing successfully in the field under all types of operating conditions. Anthony P. Straggi, President of E Global Solutions stated that we are extremely excited about ESWC's ThermaCat(TM) technology. This article suggests we should see CARB verification for the On-Road ThermaCat by the end of May. I suspect this is more than just a hunch by the writer, noting our customer/partner in Europe announced to its shareholders that we would get a CARB verification by the end of April and, sure enough, ESWW received verification for the OFF-Road ThermaCat on April 30.

Here is the approval for the enige itself upon which the power pac assembly was applied.

Deutz Model BF4M1013FC Diesel Engine. Approval No. 07-EPA080001-0,
issued to Bucyrus America, Inc., 4041 Wurno Road, Pulaski, VA 24301, May 15, 2008.

Now, the interesting question is did BUCY get MSHA approval for the engine itself to meet different requirements and then get approval for the power package that was always going to go on it? OR, did the engine get approved with the power package on it originally and then they decided to get the power package approved separately because they wanted to use it on other products as well??

I do not know enough about MSHA requirements yet to know if there is any significance to these separate approvals, as they may pertain to ESWW.

GWMAN GWMAN 15 years ago
By the way, from what I can deduce thus far, the Permissible Cat is likely a combination of the MSHA-approved Terra Cat (ESWW's M Cat DOC and FST's fiberglass filter) and the reduced surface temperature design technology that we saw in the military (IR Shield) work.

Also, here is the CFR relevant to surface temperature control, which I found interesting. Note that ESW indicated in October their target temperature limit was 300 degrees F, while the CFR beloe notes 400 degree limit. It is nice to see we can undercut the allowed temperature by so much.

§ 36.48 Tests of surface temperature of engine and components of the cooling system.

(a) The surface temperatures of the engine, exhaust cooling system, and other components subject to heating by engine operation shall be determined with the engine operated as prescribed by MSHA. All parts of the engine, cooling system, and other components shall have reached their respective equilibrium temperatures. The exhaust cooling system shall be operated, but air shall not be circulated over the engine or components. Surface temperatures shall be measured at various places prescribed by MSHA to determine where maximum temperatures develop.

(b) The temperature of any surface shall not exceed 400 °F.

Note to §36.48: The engine may be operated under test conditions prescribed by MSHA while completely surrounded by a flammable mixture. MSHA reserves the right to apply combustible materials to any surface for test. Operation under such conditions shall not ignite the flammable mixture.

Bucyrus and ESWW's Permissible Cat

For those actually interested in the company, I have started to try and track down more info on the Bucyrus and Permissible connection.

Note that Permissible text from the 10-K:

ESW's Permissible Cat(TM) is a current product that helps the mining community meet the new emission targets regulated by MSHA and is currently being used by Bucyrus Inc as part of an engine pack to meet the new MSHA underground coal mining requirements. It is also designed to reduce hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and unpleasant odors.

It is also very important to note that also in the 10-K is the note that at least one customer has already had its engine certified with a Permissible Cat. This customer must be Bucyrus.

I cannot be positive at this point this is the engine in question, but here is one ceritification given to Bucyrus in December of 2008:

"The following product was approved or certified as having met Part 36, Title 30 CFR.
1. Model 488D Diesel-Powered UNATRAC. Approval No. 36-CA080009-0, issued to Bucyrus America, Inc., 4041 Wurno Road, Pulaski, VA 24301, December 17, 2008."

Environmental Solutions Worldwide, Inc: ThermaCat(TM) Active Level III Catalyst System Verified By CARB for Off-Road Applications
May 4, 2009 9:30:00 AM
Copyright Business Wire 2009

Email Story Discuss on ZenoBank

View Additional ProfilesCONCORD, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Environmental Solutions Worldwide Inc. (OTCBB: ESWW) (Frankfurt Stock Exchange FWB: EOW) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary ESW Canada Inc. (ESWC) received notification from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) that the Company's ThermaCat(TM) Active Level III Plus catalyst system has been verified effective April 28, 2009 for a wide variety of 1996 to 2009 diesel powered off-road mobile applications.

With this new CARB Executive Order DE-09-010, the ThermaCat(TM) becomes the first verified mobile off-road Level III Plus diesel particulate filter system to combine a passive Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) with ESWC's proprietary active real-time diesel fuel based exothermic regeneration components. (1.)

The ThermaCat(TM) system is also the first verified Level III Plus device for use on both tracked (example: Dozer, Excavator) and rubber tire (example: Loader, Grader) equipment powered by a wide variety of medium/heavy-duty diesel off-road engines. The ThermaCat(TM), as verified, proved capable of reducing diesel Particulate Matter (PM), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Hydro Carbon (HC) in excess of 85% while meeting the nationwide stringent nitrogen dioxide (NO2) limitations. This new NO2 limit, which came into effect on January 1, 2009, requires that all verified diesel emission retrofit technologies sold and installed in North America must not increase NO2 emissions by more than 20%.

Through thousands of hours of infield applications and qualified emissions lab testing, the ThermaCat(TM) system demonstrated its ability to monitor engine exhaust temperature and pressure, determine when the required conditions are met and create a diesel fuel based exothermic temperature increase into the DPF. This repeated, controlled process of regenerating the collected Particulate Matter (PM) stored in the DPF in real-time engine/equipment operation lowers the systems backpressure. By doing so, the ThermaCat(TM) maintains optimized emissions reductions in cold or inconsistent duty cycle applications without the need for operator interface, expensive equipment downtime or daily maintenance intervals. This unique approach gives the ThermaCat(TM) Active Level III Plus catalyst system a very large potential cross section and demographic of applications.

On July 6, 2007 CARB adopted a pioneering regulation aimed at reducing toxic and cancer-causing diesel emissions from the state's estimated 180,000 "off-road" vehicles used in construction, mining, airport ground support and other industries. This new regulation as reported outlines a potential $3.5 billion retrofit market over its lifetime. (2.)

On February 17, 2009 the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was signed by President Obama. This $789 billion stimulus legislation program allows for $300 million in grants to be administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) program. This funding is available to heavy duty diesel on road vehicles and off road equipment owners to retrofit their engines to reduce diesel emissions. (3.)

David J. Johnson, ESW's President and CEO stated "This first ThermaCat(TM) Level III Plus Executive Order marks what we believe to be the beginning of several CARB verifications and is an extremely significant accomplishment for our Company. Verifying emission control technologies that meet increasingly stringent CARB and EPA regulations is a critical aspect of our business plan and essential to our customers, partners and distributors. Moving forward, we anticipate announcing sales and future product verifications for on-road, off-road and marine/locomotive applications."

Mr. Johnson further remarked, "It is our belief that with our diversified emission control technologies and our CARB and EPA recognized engine and emissions testing 'Tech Center' operated by our wholly owned subsidiary ESW America, we have positioned the Company to take advantage of the growing and well funded diesel retrofit market. We consider the Company to be well situated to address existing and future legislative and regulatory requirements."

Environmental Solutions Worldwide, Inc Awarded $731,000 Grant for EPA Verification of the XTRM Cat Marine/ Locomotive Catalyst

Tuesday April 7, 2009, 9:30 am EDT

Print.CONCORD, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Environmental Solutions Worldwide Inc. (OTCBB: ESWW - News) (Frankfurt Stock Exchange FWB: EOW) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary ESW America Inc. (ESWA) has been awarded a $731,000.00 grant for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) verification of the Company’s proprietary XTRM Cat™ Marine/Locomotive catalyst technology from the Texas Environmental Research Consortium (TERC) and the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC).

This new grant is intended to support ESWA in the final testing of the XTRM Cat™ technology in real-world applications along with providing a platform for EPA verification. In March of 2009 the EPA finalized more stringent emissions standards for locomotives and marine compression-ignition engines opening the door for this exciting newly regulated market. (1.)

This grant is made possible by the New Technology Research and Development (NTRD) Program which was created in 2001 by the 77th Texas Legislature. The NTRD Program is funded by the State of Texas through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). NTRD grants are designed to expedite the commercialization of new and innovative emission reduction technologies that will improve the air quality of Texas.

First, they have done several PRs in the same week several times. It is their habit to do it this way. Second, note none of the PRs mentioned money or size.

Given the economy, this stock will not start its recovery until it gets an order worth a few million dollars that shows recurring revenue. That could be as soon as later this year and it could be never. ESWW is a wait and see. IMHO.

(ESWC) has received the status of ‘Emerging Technology’ for its XtrmCat™ Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

In August of 2008, ESW applied to EPA to have the XtrmCat™ DOC listed as an ‘Emerging Technology’ based on the fact that DOC’s have not yet achieved stand alone EPA verification status on EMD 2 stroke marine/locomotive engines. ESW worked closely with EPA to establish the test plan for this new technology, such as providing recently generated R&D data from the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to support the claim of reducing 25% or greater Particulate Matter (PM). This achievement was demonstrated with the XtrmCat™ DOC installed as a post turbo catalyst/muffler application on the EMD test engine and required no other engine modifications.

Mr. David J. Johnson, ESW's President and CEO commented, “The ESWC Team is grateful for the test plan approval and subsequent ‘Emerging Technology’ listing on the EPA’s website. With this new listing, end users such as marine operators are now capable of applying for grant funding for installing the XtrmCat™ under the EPA administered program. We are looking forward to implementing the necessary steps for final verification in both field use and at SwRI’s testing facility. We believe, once EPA verified, the XtrmCat™ will give the Company a great head start in the marine/locomotive emissions retrofit sector.”
