Bayer AG said Monday that it has filed a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court for review of a case in which a plaintiff said its glyphosate weedkiller caused cancer.

The German conglomerate, through its subsidiary Monsanto, filed a petition for a Writ of Certiorari--which requests the Supreme Court to order a lower court to send up the suit for review--for a case concerning a California resident named Edwin Hardeman, who said that his lymphoma was caused by the weedkiller Roundup.

According to Bayer, which previously flagged its intention to file the petition, the decision could affect thousands of other suits and influence others still pending in the U.S.

Bayer said in late July that it would set aside a further $4.5 billion in provisions to end litigation around its Roundup weedkiller, in the event of an unfavorable Supreme Court ruling related to the Hardeman case.
