Conifex Timber Inc. on Friday said it would temporarily curtail its Mackenzie, British Columbia, sawmill operations for two weeks, starting Oct. 11.

"BC Ministry of Forests policies and practices which position sawmills in the BC Interior region at the high end of the industry cost curve, combined with a steep decline in lumber prices during a period of softer global market demand, have necessitated Conifex take this step," the company said.

Conifex said it expects the temporary curtailment will affect production capacity by about 7 million board feet in the fourth quarter.

In Aug., the company, citing "acute transportation challenges," said it was reducing the operating schedule at the Mackenzie sawmill to a one-shift basis.
