Great Place to Work is the only company culture award in the world that selects winners based on how fairly employees are treated. Companies are assessed on their ability to create a great employee experience that cuts across race, gender, age, disability status, or any aspect of employee identity or job role.

"We are delighted that we have been recognized by our employees as one of the world's best workplaces," said Brian Porter, President and CEO, Scotiabank. "We are especially proud to be the only Canadian-based company and the only financial institution to place on the ranking. This award demonstrates that we have an outstanding culture and a winning team who feel both supported and motivated to deliver for our customers and communities across our footprint."

Throughout the last year, Scotiabank has announced new initiatives and has received accolades for its commitment toward supporting employees' total wellbeing, including:

  • In celebration of World Mental Health Day last week, Scotiabank was recognized with the Gold Standard Award from Excellence Canada for creating a psychologically safe environment. As part of the announcement, Scotiabank announced increased elder care support for employees in Canada who are caregiving for older family members, expanding the access to five back-up childcare days per child annually to also include access to five back-up days for elder care.
  • The Bank expanded its mental health coverage from $3,000 to $10,000 for all eligible employees and their dependents in Canada, which includes services like clinical counsellors, internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy, psychologists and more.
  • Scotiabank was named one of the "Best Places to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality" by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, achieving a perfect 100 percent score on the HRC's most recent Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a nationally-recognized benchmarking report on corporate policies and practices in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) workplace equality. In fact, the Bank announced last week the extension of medical benefits to same-sex partners in Barbados, the first financial institution to do so in the country. The same industry-first move was made in Trinidad & Tobago in 2021.
  • Scotiabank announced a new global standard for parental leave across its global footprint by 2025. The enhanced offering includes 8 fully paid weeks for all parents welcoming a new child and 8 additional fully paid weeks for parents who have given birth. This new standard has begun to be implemented in the majority of the 24 countries across the Bank's footprint including Latin America and the Caribbean. The standard will be fully implemented in Canada and the Asia-Pacific region in 2023.
