Wells Fargo & Co. on Friday appointed Kyle Hranicky, the head of its middle market banking segment, as chief executive of its commercial banking operation.

Mr. Hranicky succeeds Perry Pelos, who moves to an advisory role until his retirement in April, the financial-services company said.

Wells Fargo said Mr. Hranicky has held a number of roles throughout a 26-year career at the company, including heading its corporate banking group, leading its energy group and as a manager in the loan syndications group originating and structuring syndicated loans. With the new role, he will serve on the company's operating committee.

Mr. Pelos, who joined Wells Fargo in 1987, has been in his current role since 2016.
