Tumblr Inc., which is part of Verizon Communications Inc.'s
(VZ), Oath Inc., said adult content won't be allowed on the
platform starting Dec. 17.
Tumblr said it will email people whose existing content has been
identified as adult, and flagged posts will revert to a private
setting.
Yahoo Inc. bought Tumblr for $1.1 billion in 2013. Yahoo's core
internet assets were sold to Verizon in 2017 for about $4.5
billion, and became part of Oath, which also includes AOL.
"Over the past several months, and inspired by our storied past,
we've given serious thought to who we want to be to our community
moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for
a better Tumblr," Tumblr said in a blog post.
In a September update to its community guidelines, Tumblr
blocked material including hate speech and "glorification of
violence."
