BioNTech SE and Pfizer Inc. said Monday that they will supply the European Union with an additional 100 million doses of their coronavirus vaccine in 2021, after the European Commission opted to purchase those doses as part of a previously signed agreement.

The companies said that this purchase brings the total number of doses to be delivered to the EU to 600 million.

The European Commission had signed an expanded advanced purchase agreement in February, which included the possible purchase of additional 100 million doses.

Pfizer's chief executive Albert Bourla said in a statement that the companies plan to deliver 250 million doses to the EU in the second quarter.
