Ford Motor is recalling over 140,000 Lincoln MKC crossover vehicles because the engine compartment could catch fire while parked or driving, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

The recall applies to 142,734 of the model year 2015 to 2019 Lincoln MKC vehicles, the NHTSA said.

"Owners should park their vehicles outside and away from structures and other vehicles until the recall has been remedied," the NHTSA said. "The risk of fire exists even when the vehicle is parked and turned off."

Ford will notify affected owners this month, according to the NHTSA, and they will be instructed to take their vehicles to a Lincoln dealer.

As of May 15, the company was aware of 19 under-hood fires, including 11 in the U.S., that may be related to the issue. Ford isn't aware of any physical injuries related to the issue.

Ford didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
