Chevron Corp. (CVX) said an operational snag early Friday morning at its Richmond refinery in northern California may cause excessive gas flaring.

"There was an issue with the furnace system which caused H2S [hydrogen sulfide] to build up, causing an influx in SO2 [sulfur dioxide]," the refinery said in a statement to the California Emergency Management Agency. "This issue has been resolved but there is a possibility that the SO2 may reach a reportable quantity."

The 250,000-barrel-a-day Richmond refinery is located just north of Oakland.
