MELVILLE, N.Y., March 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Enabling
powerful research, Canon U.S.A.,
Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, celebrates the
25th anniversary of wolf restoration in Yellowstone National Park along with the
company's support for wildlife research and conservation in the
park for more than 20 years. In 1995, the U.S. government restored
wolves back to the park, where they had been absent for more than
70 years. Since the reintroduction, wolves have played a
significant role in the park's ecosystem and recently gray wolves
have been delisted from the endangered species list in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.
Eyes on Yellowstone, an
education and research program, has been made possible through
Canon U.S.A. Inc.'s proud
sponsorship with Yellowstone Forever, the park's official
non-profit partner. Canon's sponsorship of Yellowstone Forever
contributes to important scientific research, including the
Yellowstone Wolf Project, and helps break new ground in
conservation, endangered species protection, and the application of
cutting-edge science and technology that is essential to managing
Yellowstone National Park's
delicate ecosystems and wildlife.
"Being socially responsible has been part of Canon U.S.A.'s cultural DNA for decades. In
recognizing that our corporate activities are supported by the
development of society as a whole, we aim to achieve growth through
sound business activities while contributing to the realization of
a better society as a good corporate citizen," said Joe Adachi, chairman and chief executive
officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "We
are honored to have played a role in research and conservation of
wolves in Yellowstone National
Park and celebrate the 25-year anniversary of the
reintroduction of the wolf population into the park."
Through the Yellowstone Wolf Project, Yellowstone National Park's research has
helped educate the staff as well as visitors regarding topics such
as the evolution of wolves living in a social group or family,
genetics and dog domestication, and how to positively impact other
wildlife programs, especially other reintroduction programs, across
the planet.
Over the past several years, Canon U.S.A.'s contribution has included
state-of-the-art optics and financial support for the Yellowstone
Wolf Project, including aerial monitoring of wolf packs in
Yellowstone.
"Canon U.S.A. has been a
steadfast partner to Yellowstone Forever, supporting a level of
monitoring and research that would not have been possible without
their generous contributions," said John
Walda, interim president and CEO of Yellowstone Forever.
"Biologists have learned a great deal from this research, which has
also benefited from the use of high-powered Canon zoom lenses with
image-stabilizing capabilities, which allow them to capture images
from airplanes."
These startlingly clear aerial images have enabled wolf
researchers to identify individual wolves in a pack, determine the
presence and number of pups in a litter, and observe strategies
that packs use to surround and kill prey.
For those wishing to learn more about what park biologists have
learned from wolf research, Yellowstone
National Park will air its #25YearsofWolves video series
every Tuesday in March via Facebook Live. The video series,
featuring the researchers who study wolves in Yellowstone, will premiere on March 3rd on Yellowstone National Park's Facebook Page.
