Uniper SE said Wednesday that its Uniper Waerme GmbH unit would cooperate with BP PLC's fully-owned refinery Ruhr Oel GmbH - BP Gelsenkirchen to use industrial waste heat for the supply of district heating.

The German utility company said a total of around 33 million euros ($37.6 million) would be invested for the project.

"According to initial calculations, this will enable us to save around 60,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year," said Nikola Feldmann, managing director at Uniper Waerme.

The first heat could be fed into UWG's district heating grid starting in the fourth quarter of 2022, Uniper said.
