Barclays PLC has hired industry veteran Hossein Zaimi to lead its Asia-Pacific markets business, the London-based bank said Thursday.

Mr. Zaimi will be based in Hong Kong. He has nearly 30 years of experience in the financial industry, including 17 years in senior leadership roles at HSBC Holdings PLC, Barclays said.

Stephen Dainton, co-head of global markets at Barclays, said in a statement that the Asia-Pacific is at the "center of our multi-year growth strategy" for global markets and that Mr. Zaimi's appointment underscores the bank's efforts to expand in the region.

Mr. Zaimi left HSBC last year. His last role at the bank was as global head of equities and global co-head of securities financing.

In March, Barclays said Matt Pecot, the previous regional head of markets, would retire.
