ALIBABA’S TMALL TO OPEN NYFW: THE SHOWS WITH A LINEUP SHOWCASING CHINA’S DESIGN TALENT

Alibaba Group’s Tmall, China’s premier B2C platform for brands and retailers, today announced its lineup of designers that will hit the runway at New York Fashion Week this September. The “Tmall China Cool” showcase will take place Wednesday, September 4th – the first day of NYFW: The Shows – and will feature a slate of Chinese designers including Peacebird, THREEGUN, RiZhuo as well as emerging designers SONGTA and i-am-chen. Tmall’s partnership with NYFW: The Shows aims to cultivate and showcase fashion talent and creative culture in China.

The first show of the day will be China’s leading multi-brand retail and fashion label Peacebird, followed by nationally renowned Chinese intimate apparel brand, THREEGUN. THREEGUN incorporates science and technology with fashion, and will present a collection inspired by the union between classic silhouettes and modern fabrics.

SONGTA and i-am-chen, two young, emerging designers, will present a collective runway show. Designed by Chinese conceptual artist Song Ta, SONGTA conceives of each of its collections as artwork by using curatorial approaches and interprets runway shows, showrooms, and e-commerce platforms as forms of ‘Exhibition.’ Zhi Chen, the founder of i-am-chen, is a semi-finalist in the 2018/2019 International Woolmark Prize Hong Kong and a recent graduate of Parsons. i-am-chen’s upcoming collection was inspired by photographer Kourtney Roy.

The Tmall China Cool Showcase will conclude with a runway show by contemporary women’s wear label, RiZhuo. Designed by Zhang Lujian, RiZhuo’s collection portrays the brand’s peaceful values towards life through simple and meticulous craftsmanship and loose, structured shapes.

“We are thrilled to be back at New York Fashion Week with another exciting line-up of Chinese design talent this year,” said Jessica Liu, General Manager of Tmall Fashion. “Tmall has always been a gateway to renowned international brands and retailers that are looking to access China. At the same time, we have empowered homegrown talent from China to grow their brands and develop their creativity and originality. This year, we are also working with brands to leverage our new trend forecasting capabilities so they are able to strengthen their position as innovative brands and capture consumer interest. Today, the fashion scene in China is more vibrant than ever and we look forward to showcasing the spirit of innovation as well as the creative talent of our ‘Tmall China Cool’ designers at New York Fashion Week.”

In addition to the runway shows, Tmall will host a pop-up exhibition featuring cross-over collaborations that are riding the “China Cool” trend. Featured brand collaborations will include Chinese confectionary company, Hsu Fu Chi and clothing brand Tyakasha, Chinese snack brand Qinqin and fashion brand Mukzin, Dove Chocolate and Hefang jewelry, and home furniture brand Ziinlife and Chow Tai Seng jewelry.

“The concept behind our ‘Tmall China Cool’ pop-up exhibition is a celebration of the design and creative powerhouse that China is becoming today. ‘China Cool’ is a trend we are seeing that blends the cutting-edge of fashion and innovation with a respect for authenticity and heritage,” said Bo Liu, General Manager of Tmall and Taobao Marketing. We have worked with both Chinese and international brands to pioneer new experiences and cross-over collaborations that are at the forefront of this trend and will be showcased in this NYFW exhibition.”
