Aflac Inc.'s first-quarter revenue fell more than expected and profit tumbled.

Aflac's net income fell 39% to $566 million, the company said. Earnings were 78 cents a share, down from $1.23 a share.

Aflac reported adjusted earnings of $1.21 a share. According to FactSet, analysts were expecting $1.10 a share.

Revenue decreased 8.8% to $5.16 billion. Analysts were expecting $5.5 billion.
