Accenture PLC (ACN) reported higher first-quarter profit as sales rose, beating analysts' expectations.

For the quarter ended Nov. 30, the company posted net income of $1.36 billion, or $2.09 a share, compared with $1.28 billion, or $1.96 a share, in the comparable quarter last year. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting earnings of $1.98 a share.

Revenue was $11.36 billion, compared with $10.61 billion in the year-ago period. Analysts were looking for $11.15 billion.

New bookings for the quarter were $10.3 billion, comprising $6 billion in consulting bookings and $4.3 billion in outsourcing bookings.

Accenture last week said it is buying the data-consultancy company Clarity Insights, a deal that will grow the company's applied intelligence business.
