Facebook Inc. said it identified the cause of a widespread outage of its Facebook, Messenger and Instagram platforms and had started restoring full access to affected users.

In a statement just after midday Thursday, the social-media giant blamed the issue on a problem in its central software systems. After complaints from users started surfacing midmorning Thursday on the East Coast, Facebook "quickly investigated, started restoring access, and we're now monitoring for full recovery."

It wasn't clear how widespread the outages were, or how long it might take to restore full services to all users.

The Thanksgiving disruption follows a series of big outages earlier this year. In March, a glitch triggered what Facebook said at the time was its longest-ever outage due to a server configuration error. That outage coincided with shorter disruptions the same day at Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google.
