Facebook Inc.'s global head of safety, Antigone Davis, said her company's research into teen mental health and Instagram is not a "bombshell" during testimony on Thursday. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D., Conn.) disagreed.

"I beg to differ with you," Mr. Blumenthal said. "This research is a bombshell. It is powerful, gripping, riveting evidence that Facebook knows of the harmful effects of its site on children, and that it has concealed those facts and findings."

Ms. Davis said the research had limitations and couldn't prove causality, but pledged to release more findings and said Facebook is looking for ways to give external researchers access to the company's data.

Ms. Davis, who faced sharp questioning also from other senators, said Facebook had made "numerous product changes" based on some of its research.
