Facebook Inc. said it appointed Robert Kimmitt, former U.S. deputy secretary of the Treasury, as its board's lead independent director.

The social-media company said Mr. Kimmitt, who also previously served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany, will join the board immediately.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said in prepared remarks that Facebook was looking for someone who had "significant oversight and governance experience" to fill the position.

The company said that Jeffrey Zients, a current Facebook board director, won't run for re-election at the company's shareholder meeting this year. Mr. Zients is the CEO of the Cranemere Group Ltd. He joined the board in 2018 and under President Barack Obama was the director of the National Economic Council.
