FTSE 100 Falls as Energy, Mining Stocks Drop
0822 GMT - The FTSE 100 Index drops 0.3%, or 19 points, to 7150
as energy and mining stocks fall amid economic jitters. North Sea
oil & gas group Harbour Energy is the top faller, down 3%,
while BP and miners BHP, Fresnillo and Anglo American also retreat
as crude-oil and base- and precious-metal prices lose ground after
downbeat Asia trading and Thursday's lower U.S. close. Brent crude
backtracks 0.1% to $108.90 a barrel. "The second half and third
quarter have begun on a gloomy note, picking up very much from
where the first half ended," IG analysts say in a note. "Once more,
inflation and growth fears predominate, as growth forecasts are cut
and expectations of a recession become stronger."
