FTSE 100 Rises as Miners, Travel Stocks Gain

0813 GMT - The FTSE 100 Index gains 0.8%, or 59 points to 7267, boosted by miners and travel-related stocks after upbeat trading in Asia. Anglo American, Antofagasta, Rio Tinto, BHP and Glencore are all among the biggest risers as precious and base metal prices advance, while TUI, International Consolidated Airlines Group and Carnival also progress after the latter on Friday posted sharply higher 2Q revenue versus 1Q. Brent crude climbs 0.4% to $109.48 a barrel. "Asian stocks made headway overnight, marking a strong start to the final week of June," IG analysts write. Oil Is Choppy as Investors Await Word on New Russia Sanctions

0800 GMT - Oil prices waver between gains and losses as investors await information on new sanctions on Russian oil. Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, rises 0.2% to $109.30 a barrel, while WTI, the U.S. gauge, rises 0.1% to $107.74 a barrel. Leaders of the G-7 nations of wealthy democracies are considering capping the prices at which they purchase Russian oil. Metals Rise Despite Global Recession Fears

0732 GMT - Metal prices are rising early on Monday with demand, despite mounting fears of a global recession. Three-month copper futures in London are up 1% to $8,405 a metric ton while nickel is up 3.6% to $22,900 a ton. Gold futures in New York are also up 0.6% to $1,840.40 a troy ounce. "Whilst not exactly a call for a turn from the current bear scenario, we do note positioning starting to show shorts emerging across risk assets," Marex's Asian metals team says at a note. "It does seem like markets are buying--but just very slightly," they add, noting that supply of base metals is expected to remain on track despite strikes in South America. (yusuf.khan@wsj.com)
