FTSE 100 to Open Lower as UK Inflation Hits 40-Year High

0641 GMT - The FTSE 100 is seen opening lower with spread betting firm IG expecting the index to fall 86 points as oil prices fall, while data showed U.K. inflation accelerated to a 40-year high. "Despite yesterday's gains, today's European open looks set to be a negative one, as a slide in oil prices over demand concerns weighs on the wider narrative, prompting weakness in Asia markets, along with U.S. [stock] futures," CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson writes. U.K. inflation rose to an annual rate of 9.1% in May from 9.0% in April, according to the Office for National Statistics, amid a cost of living crisis. Meanwhile, U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell delivers a testimony before the Senate Banking Committee at 1330 GMT. (renae.dyer@wsj.com)
