ENI SpA (ENI.MI) said Wednesday that it has signed an agreement to collaborate on a project worth over 600 million euros ($660.9 million).

The Italian energy major will work with ENEA, Italy's national agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development, to establish a scientific and technological center for fusion DTT, or Divertor Tokamak Test, at ENEA's research centre in Rome.

The project will be carried out through DDT Scarl, a joint venture where Eni holds 25%, ENEA holds 74% and Consorzio CREATE holds the remaining 1%.

"This partnership reflects Eni's strategic vision for the transformation of the global energy sector, in which magnetic confinement fusion will be able to play a major role," said Eni Chief Executive Claudio Descalzi.
