ENI SpA (ENI.MI) was fined 5 million euros ($5.6 million) for a misleading advertisement campaign about its Diesel+ fuel, the Italian competition authority said Wednesday.

In its campaign, the Italian oil-and-gas company claimed "green diesel" significantly contributes to reducing greenhouse emissions, encouraging consumers to adopt it in order to "protect the environment," according to the Italian authority.

"The deceptiveness of the messages stemmed primarily from the confusion between the product advertised by EniDiesel+ and its HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) biodiesel component, called by Eni 'Green Diesel', attributing to the product as a whole environmental claims that were unfounded," the authority said.

Eni has interrupted the advertisement campaign and said it will not use the word "green" in relation to automotive fuels, according to the competition authority.

The company wasn't immediately available for comment.
