Carrington College® is proud to announce its Mesquite, Texas campus has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The campus opened on Feb. 27, and offers programs in medical and dental assisting.

“We had a very clear vision when we planned our first campus in Texas. We wanted to offer modern classrooms with spacious computer centers and high-tech medical learning laboratories, while also offering our students an opportunity to work in an energy saving environment,” said Tamara Rozhon, Ed.D., president of Carrington College. “The LEED recognition is an honor and we consider it important to our sustainability efforts.”

Located at 3733 W. Emporium, the campus was designed to achieve LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use, as well as to incorporate a variety of other sustainable strategies. LEED verifies environmental performances, occupant health and financial return. The certification was established for market leaders to design and construct buildings that protect and save precious resources while also making good economic sense.

“Carrington College’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chair of USGBC. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and Carrington College serves as a prime example of just how much we can accomplish.

Campus features that earned the LEED certification include:

  • Optimizing energy performance through lighting power, HVAC, equipment, and appliances
  • Reducing water usage by installing low-flow and motion-activation plumbing fixtures and water efficient landscaping
  • Providing bicycle storage and changing rooms along with access to public transportation
  • Committing to a 4-year agreement with a green energy provider
  • Using green cleaning products
  • Making storage and recycling bins available throughout the campus
  • Utilizing recycled and regional construction materials
  • Continuing education in LEED and sustainability

The campus will host a program expo on May 8, from 11a.m.-1p.m. that will include campus tours with special stops to highlight the green features, as well as a dedication ceremony at 12:30. Melody Rider, executive director of Carrington College, Mesquite, will be on-hand to share comments about the college’s commitment to the students and community.
