The European Union's antitrust watchdog has requested
information from five telecommunications companies relating to
meetings to discuss standardization of mobile telecoms, a spokesman
for the bloc's competition chief said Wednesday.
The requests went to Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE.XE), France
Telecom (FTE.FR), Telefonica SA (TEF.MC), Vodafone Group PLC (VOD)
and Telecom Italia (TIA) as well as GSMA, the trade body which
represents mobile operators' interests.
"The requests for information relate to the manner in which
standardisation for future services in the mobile communications
area is taking place," a spokesman for European Union competition
chief Joaquin Almunia said in an email. "The Commission has not
opened formal proceedings. These fact-finding steps do not mean
that we have competition concerns at this stage, nor do they
prejudge the follow-up."
