FRAMINGHAM, Mass.,
Oct. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/
-- Nicholson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning,
a family-owned home service company and recipient of the Angie's
List Super Service Award for the eighth year in a row, is offering
advice to Boston-area homeowners
looking to improve the indoor air quality of their home or combat
the possible development of mold during a damp fall season.
"Indoor air quality can be affected by a number of things, from
pollen to cat dander to mold," said Mike Nicholson, owner of Nicholson
Plumbing, Heating, & Air Conditioning. "Once the
weather starts turning cooler, homeowners spend more and more time
indoors. If they aren't careful, the air they're breathing can
become stale and full of pollutants."
One thing Nicholson suggests might be a bit surprising to some
homeowners: Opening windows.
"There are certain times of year that are perfect for opening a
home's window: spring and fall," Nicholson said. "Summer and winter
temperatures can be too extreme, but opening windows in the fall
allows fresh air to circulate throughout the home. Using a ceiling
fan helps, too."
Nicholson also stresses regular cleaning. While many may think
of spring as the prime time to clean, Nicholson says cleaning is
vital in the fall, especially once the house is closed up in
winter. A professional can help when it comes to cleaning areas
like air ducts. He also urges homeowners to give blankets and
comforters that have been stored away for the summer a fresh wash
before using.
"Cleaning not only helps with air quality, but it can help
locate existing issues before they become major or costly repairs,"
Nicholson said. "Air ducts can harbor mold, as can the areas near
your pipes. Homeowners should stay on top of these potential
issues, and all it takes is a little preventative care."
Nicholson encourages homeowners to install humidifiers and
schedule a tune-up for their heating and cooling system. In fact,
if not properly maintained, an HVAC system can develop moisture and
mold, releasing harmful spores into the home.
"Nothing will help indoor air quality as much as a maintained
heating and cooling system," Nicholson said. "Your HVAC system is
responsible for circulating the air throughout your entire home, so
you want to make sure the air it's pushing out is clean. Check your
filters at least once a month, and get them replaced if they're
dirty."
