LOS ANGELES, April 24, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- An
April 3 article on Reuters reports on
a Swedish study regarding the impact of weight loss procedures on
marriages and relationships. The study found that the rate of new
marriages or relationships following a procedure increased
significantly. For example, ten years after the procedure, 21
percent of the mostly female participants had gotten married or
started a new relationship, in comparison to just 11 percent in
comparison to the control group. There was also a notable increase
in divorces. The authors wrote that surgery can spur a
"recalibration of relationships, with patients realizing that they
can indeed get out of unhappy relationships and/or initiate new
healthy ones." Dr. Feiz & Associates says that it's true that
defeating obesity once and for all with the help of a weight loss
procedure can definitely inspire major changes, including giving
patients the increased confidence that can allow them to start new
relationships and/or end unhappy partnerships.
It's important to remember, however, that bariatric procedures
such as a sleeve gastrectomy are not magic; while they make it
vastly less difficult to achieve a large weight loss and maintain
it over time, patients still have to dramatically change their
relationship with food, says the clinic. It's also important for
patients to have realistic expectations about what happens after
obesity has been vanquished. Specifically, says Dr. Feiz &
Associates, it sometimes happens that patients tend to blame nearly
all of the issues in their lives on their obesity. When the obesity
is gone, however, and many of the problems still remain, patients
may experience a sense of disappointment. The clinic notes that,
just as obese individuals tend to overemphasize the importance of
food, they may also somewhat overestimate obesity's negative impact
in terms of their emotional wellbeing.
Dr. Feiz & Associates adds that it's important that patients
seriously consider all aspects of their health, both physical and
mental, before and after a procedure. It adds that bariatric
surgery has become extremely safe and reliable, but it is still a
surgery that impacts the body in a great many ways, which can also
impact their emotional outlook. It's therefore important for
patients to manage their expectations and, where appropriate,
obtain counseling support to help them manage what will undeniably
be major changes. If they approach the situation with a reasonable
amount of caution, and communicate openly and honestly with medical
personnel, there's every reason to expect that the major change
will be one significantly for the better, says Dr. Feiz &
Associates.
