Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR) and Westinghouse Electric Spain have been awarded a nuclear dismantling engineering contract by Spain's radioactive waste-management agency, known as ENRESA, the French company said on Wednesday.

Under the four-year contract, EDF said it will provide engineering services for the dismantling of the unit one reactor at Vandellos nuclear power station in Spain, alongside Westinghouse Electric Spain.

The companies will provide ENRESA with services to help keep the Vandellos gas-cooled reactor in a safe state after it was permanently shut down in 1989, EDF added.

"With 9 dismantling projects underway in France, 6 of which involve gas-cooled reactors, EDF possesses unique expertise in this field and is aspiring to become a leader on the emerging dismantling market," said Sylvain Granger, EDF's director of decommissioning and waste-management projects.
