LOS ANGELES, July 19, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A
July 6 article on Redbook Magazine
touts the oral health benefits of three "superfoods": red bell
peppers (rich in gum-friendly vitamin C), celery (a tasty and
refreshing natural tooth cleaner), and cheddar cheese (rich in
tooth-enamel building calcium, phosphorous, and casein protein).
Medical Center Dental Care, a comprehensive family dental clinic in
the Western San Fernando Valley, says that, while a balanced diet
rich in vegetables and high-calcium dairy or soy is good for our
teeth, gums, and the rest of us, good oral health care still
requires daily brushing and flossing, as well as twice yearly
dental visits.
The clinic says that the Redbook article makes an excellent
point because, just like the rest of the human body, teeth and gums
rely on nutrients obtained from food for growth and maintenance;
it's also true that, long before the invention of toothbrushes,
humanity largely relied on crunchy foods like celery, apples, and
jicama to clean teeth and limit tooth decay – although with
admittedly very mixed results. However, while many of us might
similarly rely mainly on kibble to keep our pets' teeth in some
kind of shape, Medical Center Dental Care notes that a dog or cat's
teeth don't need to last as long as a human's -- and that
veterinarians nevertheless tell us that our pets should always have
their teeth brushed regularly (even if few cat owners dare try).
With more and more human beings now regularly living into their
nineties and beyond, it's important to do everything possible to
maintain our teeth and gums for as long as possible, and even good
home-based oral hygiene can still leave a great deal of tooth-decay
causing plaque and calculus that only a skilled dental professional
can safely remove, says the clinic.
Medical Center Dental Care adds that it invokes the wise words
of the late comedian, Soupy Sales: "Be true to your teeth, and they
will never be false to you." The clinics adds that, while dentures
might not sound so bad to people who don't' have them, losing a
tooth is never a pleasant process and most people don't realize how
difficult teeth are to properly replace. Dental implants are the
only solution that actually deal with the issue of bone loss, but
getting them is far from cheap and always time consuming. As
always, says the clinic, prevention with regular cleanings and
excavations– even for the very youngest of us with a pediatric
dentist – is the only way there is to truly keep our commitment to
our teeth.
