Avon Products Inc. (AVP) has named James Thompson as its chief beauty and brand officer as the direct seller of cosmetics undergoes restructuring and looks to turn around the company.

The appointment of Mr. Thompson, a veteran of Diageo PLC, is effective Nov. 1, Avon said Tuesday. Mr. Thompson will spearhead the "rejuvenation" of Avon's more than 130-year-old brand, the company said. He will report to Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Myers.

With Mr. Thompson's appointment, Avon's current GVP of Global Brand Marketing, Alex Long, will transition to GVP of Global Commercial Marketing, the company said.

Mr. Thompson joins Avon after a 24-year career at Diageo, where he most recently served as chief marketing and innovation officer for Diageo North America. Before that, Mr. Thompson also served as global managing director of Diageo's luxury portfolio and chief marketing and innovation officer for Diageo Asia Pacific and Global Travel. Prior to Diageo, he also spent 10 years at Unilever PLC in various marketing positions.
