An investor will typically invest in stocks to make money from the movement in the share price and from the dividends that a company will pay.
Typically an investor will look to make money by a stock increasing in price. However, it is possible to make money if the price is going down by using a method called shorting.
Stocks can be traded by everyone from an individual stock investor right up to a large hedge fund.
