The S&P 500

The S&P 500 is a market-cap weighted index of the 500 largest companies actively traded on the NYSE and NASDAQ markets in the US.

It is considered a leading benchmark for the American economy. Many funds such as pension and mutual funds are designed to track the performance of the S&P 500.

The index consists mainly of US-based companies, although there are a few with headquarters in other countries. The rules now state that any new companies added to the index must be US based.
