Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Mobile’s biggest shareholder, and Simon Duffy, the chief executive of NTL, had been hammering out plans for a media powerhouse, the UK’s first “quadruple play” business offering broadband internet, fixed-line and mobile phone services and digital television, all under the Virgin brand.
If it comes off the new outfit will have nine million customers and compete with the likes of BSkyB.
