Egypt : The Mobile TV Company Kamera launches a joint venture in Egypt. Together with the leading production company in the Middle East, Video Cairo Sat, Kamera will produce video content for mobile and internet distribution in the pan-Arabic region. The offering will include international and local news, entertainment and sport.
The name of Kamera’s joint venture is Swegypt. By combining Kamera’s international content and technical platform with Video Cairo Sat’s regional content, Swegypt will create a unique offering for Arab-speaking mobile operators and online portals.
“Successful media business in the Arab region calls for local content and cultural adaptation, something we couldn’t provide ourselves. Our cooperation with Video Cairo Sat makes it possible to deliver content to viewers in most Arab speaking countries”, says Henrik Eklund, CEO of Kamera.
So far, many countries in the Middle East have been lagging behind Europe in the number of Internet and mobile users. But now these markets are catching up quickly. Between 2004 and 2008 the number of mobile users is expected to grow from 44 to 110 million, and the number of internet users from 17 to 52 million. This development will create a growing demand for content.
“There is pressure on mobile operators to offer services that really demonstrate the value of 3G. Video is one of those services, and since we deliver sports content, which is very much in demand, we expect a very exciting development over the next few years”, says Henrik Eklund.
During the last six months Kamera has achieved steady business growth and development. Notable milestones include:
Increase in the number of mobile operator clients from 3 to 17.
Launching services in Asia, Africa and South America.
Award for “most downloaded news clip”
Contract with China’s leading Internet portal Sina
