You "make" the most of it? Are you still there or did you mean you made ...? (I thought you were in Scotland.)

One of the things I loved about Brussels itself was it was virtually untouched by WWII, destruction-wise, so it had layers and layers of history behind every gate and wall. I read a little book -- lean, spare -- written by a woman who had lived on Avenue Louise during the war, near Gestapo headquarters. She wrote it many many years later, at her (British) husband's encouragemnt, as much as anything to finally close that chapter of her life for herself. Her grandmother was German and lived with her family so she spoke German fluently, without a give-away French accent. She was 18 or 19 and unbeknownst to her family she got herself hired by the Gestapo, secretary or something to the big mucky muck in charge. Every day she lived in stark terror, feared she'd be uncovered and discovered for what she was doing, working with the Resistance, and either she or her family or both would be killed. The things she did were almost impossible to believe (but entirely authenticated), including knifing her boss at dawn one morning as he was leaving his mistress's apartment and then going to "work" and being as perplexed as the others when he didn't show up and then as "shocked" and "horrifed" when his body was found.

And on that cheery note, enough of this OT digression.
