I think the demise of whs is very sad. As someone brought up in a medium size uk town in the 70's, Smiths were "THE" place to spend your money. Whether on comics, singles, tapes, school geometry sets or even books. Unfortunately for them, people and other shops have moved on while they're in a timewarp. Their shops are virtaully all the wrong size, especially the ones on the high street which are too small to give the range of goods available elsewhere (esp in the book and music sectors). They should move out of music retailing all together and make sure that they are the best newsagents in smaller shops designed as convenience stores like the shops they have at London Railway Stations. Cut the staff costs, property costs before its too late. Be interesting to know what stock they're having to write down because they can't sell it.
