Gazprom says supplies via Ukraine at 455.2 mln cubic metres vs 480 mln normally
MOSCOW (AFX) - Gazprom said gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine are almost
back to the level they were at before Russia halted supplies to Ukraine on Jan
1.
Gazprom stopped supplying gas to Ukraine amid a pricing dispute with that
country.
In the 24 hours to 07.00 GMT, it pumped 455.2 mln cubic metres of gas,
compared with 480 mln per day before it cut supplies on Sunday at 07.00 GMT.
Of the normal amount, 360 mln were destined for Europe and 120 mln for
Ukraine.
After the supply cut, deliveries fell to 360 mln cubic metres, exactly the
same amount that was destined for Europe. After Gazprom noticed that gas was
being siphoned off and that supplies to European customers were declining, it
increased deliveries.
The amount of gas that had reached the Ukrainian mouth of the pipeline by
07.00 GMT was 365.1 mln cubic metres -- 5 mln more than normal before the
shutdown.
Gazprom said this means Ukraine has siphoned off some 90 mln cubic metres of
gas, compared with the 120 mln cubic metres that Ukraine used to buy.
Gazprom said it will compensate its European customers for the gas that was
siphoned off but said it cannot continue to compensate them forever.
Ukraine has denied siphoning off any gas from the pipeline that crosses its
territory.
