Gazprom stopped storing gas in Ukrainian underground reservoirs this summer already and redirected it to the EU. Ukraine approached the winter with reserves of 16-17 billion cu. m. instead of the usual 30 billion. By conservative estimate, without gas from Turkmenistan as well, Ukraine will feel the lack of fuel three weeks after it is cut off. The delivery of gas from Turkmenistan, which has been the country's single-largest supplier, will 'though be a key issue for Ukraine. On Sunday, Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov said 39 billion cubic meters would be delivered to Ukraine this year — about the same amount as last year — which comes via pipelines transiting Russia...
Gazprom provides about half the gas consumed in the EU, and about 80 percent of that amount is sent in pipelines across Ukraine. The price dispute has raised wide concerns that European supplies could be affected too.
A Foreign Ministry statement Sunday said Russia would "strictly fulfill" its supply commitments to Europe and that "responsibility for any possible ... problems for European countries caused by the actions of Kiev will lie with Ukraine."
Ukrainian officials have said previously that its transit arrangements would allow it to siphon off up to 15 percent of the gas moving through the country. Russia declared that this would be outright theft....
