Ukraine vows retaliation against Moscow

KIEV, Ukraine (UPI) -- Ukraine ratcheted up its conflict Tuesday with Russia over how much Kiev should pay Moscow for imported natural gas.
Specifically, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuri Yekhanurov said his nation has a right to siphon off 15 percent of the Russian natural gas that is transited through its territory to Europe as a charge for pipeline use, MosNews said.
The announcement marks the most explicit and defiant response to date by Ukraine to the Kremlin`s decision to virtually quadruple the price of natural gas, beginning Sunday.
Earlier this week, Russia vowed to take its neighbor to the Stockholm Court of Arbitration if such siphoning occurs.
Ukrainians demonstrated in Kiev Monday against the Kremlin effort to radically increase the cost of natural gas, widely seen in Ukraine as Russian President Vladimir Putin`s punishment for their election of a pro-western head of state.
