Just possibly this may be another Watergate... but more likely the source is a contact the journalist phoned for an opinion or (if you go the conspiracy route) someone with an interest making a call to an old friend on the Mail desk. Either way, the writer makes no attempt to evaluate the source's information. "Rescue" is an emotive and (in this context) misleading term, and placing it in quotes hardly balances it. So experts from the institutions go over the company books and see a fatal downside the management is blind to? A lot less plausible, in view of what we know so far, than the argument that the bankers are haggling down the price on something that's worth having.
