Computerised CBT Must be Offered by March
In February 2006 NICE recommended two computerised cognitive behavioural therapy (cCBT) packages for use in the NHS – Beating the Blues (depression) and Fearfighter (panic and phobia). PCTs are expected to be able to offer these cCBT packages by 31 March 2007, and have developed referral protocols for GPs. A new dedicated website (www.mhchoice.org.uk/) contains updated information on the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme.
The MH Choice website also includes new guidance for mental health service users and carers, published by the Department of Health. Our Choices in Mental Health provides advice and information on the kind of choices patients should receive and how practitioners can extend the services they offer. It includes many positive practice examples showing how improvements are being achieved, such as the Swindon PCT Primary Care ‘No Wait’ Psychology/Counselling Service which can be accessed in the same way as booking a GP appointment.
