House prices

Sir, How reassuring that British hypocrisy lives on. Gabriel Rozenberg writes that house-price increases are “healthy” and “above inflation” (“House price rally defies the huffers and puffers”, report, Dec 28). Can we expect the same sanguine approach when we have some healthy, above-inflation wage increases?

Sir, Gabriel Rozenberg takes a very negative view about a potential low rise in property values. “A drop of 5 per cent in prices” might be “unwelcome” to people in the industry; estate agents, surveyors, money lenders, insurance companies, property developers and so on. But for first-time buyers and most of the public, I think it is great news. Long may the buyer dictate value, not the “experts”.

Sir, You report “Homeowners’ hopes for a new year revival in house prices” (Dec 3).

Why should we hope for that? Unless, that is, we plan to emigrate or live in a tent, or we aspire to a higher council tax band and would like to pay more for buildings insurance.

most homeowners dont even want the market to rise!!
