Did some Google research on the Maldives this am as I initially thought they would have been hard hit. However due I think to the fact the Islands are so low lying the damage was limited to flood and salt contamination on the whole because the water rushed over rather than broke wave. Several Islands evacuated and some deaths, but judging from what I read they may be able to recover given time and money.
However I think the longer-term damage is going to be salt contamination of the ground, which may affect the plant life and food producing ability of the Islands, an issue perhaps almost unique to the Maldives given their small size and low average above sea level height. Not sure how you repair soil damaged in this way except natural process over time
