I've recently read the book "krakatoa" which I thionk you would find interesting.

a couple of parallels that may be of interest.

When Krakatoa blew, it co-incided with the birth of the telegraph. It was the first mega disaster published around the world (we've now got sky of course and video).

The science behind it wasn't well understood (much as now really) and led to mega research into natural phenomena.

led to a resurection of domesday cult movements (the end is nigh etc)

As a result of this disaster I am hoping:

1. The UN proves its effectiveness in alleviating a catastrophe
2. The demonstrable good coming from effective organisation and money ( neither al quaeda nor the tamil tigers will be airlifting in food and shelter, whereas the indonesian and indian army will be)

I am expecting

3. superconfidence and money pump into the markets ( we can overcome the worst mothernature has)

4. another biggy next year different place with very different financial results. March Yellowstone is my punt.


It also makes me very very glad to live in england. no major tectonic plates. last big erathquake was great yarmouth 1927 (3.2), no volcanoes, little tsunami risk. even germany got trashed in the 1800s with quakes, italys volcano ridden, and portugal has a very sad history, japan is typhoon/ quake country, sydneys on a fault, paris is on a fault. we are lucky to be here in blighty.(Scottish are of course at risk from Icelandic volcanic ash, but not worried about them).

without wishing to sounmd like a crank, these events do make people question the nature of their god ( a biblical event).

Most superquakes havent killed that many because the earth wasnt that populated (especially Americas). An exception was a tsunami about 300 years ago that jilled 25,000 in Japan. They's all gathered for a religious festival. You'd rightly or wrongly take a hint from that that he wasn't pleased at the time.
