JAKARTA (AFX) - Tidal wave expert Fauzi of the Indonesian Meteorology and
Geophysics Bureau has warned on local radio that aftershocks strong enough to
cause more great waves could recur.
Fauzi warned residents of Sumatra not to stay inside and urged them to seek
higher ground away from the coast.
The Indian weather office also warned aftershocks could trigger more "big
waves" and said that people should not go near the coastline.
Later today, an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck Nicobar
at 0939 GMT but it was not clear whether it would trigger new tsunamis, a Thai
seismologist said.
"We cannot tell whether it would trigger a new tidal wave, but the
earthquake was felt in Phuket," a seismologist from Thailand's weather service
told Agence France-Presse.
Yesterday morning's massive tidal waves, caused by a powerful earthquake
measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale off the coast of Aceh, has killed more than
23,000 people in eight countries.
Seismologists have recorded 65 follow-up tremors in Aceh but said they were
well below the strength of yesterday's earthquake.
