Happy New Year all, congratulations Holmess(s)!

The copyright for the paper you quote has presumably been given to Elsevier, so some time around June 2005 you should be able to buy the 800 page conference proceedings for the modest sum of £180 (assuming it follows the same pattern as last year). One wonders why they bother with all this, when it would be so much easier, quicker and cheaper for all concerned just to post the whole lot on a web site somewhere...
I don't know if this has been posted elsewhere (iii maybe – I don't get the time to go there very often) but searching for 'toroidal OR “continuously variable” OR variator' in the title or abstract, with Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) as the assignee in the Espacenet European patent database gives quite a few hits.
Of the 9 apparently relevant patents, there are 2 with publication dates in 2002, 2 in 2003, and 5 in 2004...
You can try for yourself here: but all in German I'm afraid.
